Leader of Mongolian Green Movement arrested during peaceful protest

Tuesday 12 August

On Tuesday 5 August 2008, Ms. Saruul Agvaandorj, Leader of the Mongolian Green Movement, and Mr. Arslan Gombosuren, Leader of the Just Society Front, were arrested while taking part in a peaceful protest. They have been detained for 14 days but what happens after that is unknown. Saruul recently attended the Global Greens Congress in São Paulo, Brazil.

Background. The Mongolian elections were held on Sunday 29 June 2008. Violent clashes followed, with protesters alleging fraud, and on Wednesday 2 July President Nambaryn Enkhbayar declared a four-day state of emergency. Five people were shot dead in the violence and hundreds were detained. Over 200 remain in detention.

According to Asian Gypsy, on 30 July, “families of the "Black Tuesday" (or Stone Revolution as some are calling it derisively) detainees along with National Green Movement and Civil Front Movement members organized a silent demonstration at Sukhbaatar Square, demanding the release of the detainees. Approximately 20 protesters began the silent protest at Sukhbaatar square with a piece of paper taped over their mouths with the message "Release", and sympathizers joined them. Gogo.mn reports that the police are now attempting to disperse the crowd, on the grounds that Sukhbaatar District administration did not approve their request to hold the demonstration.”

Saruul and Arslan were arrested on the grounds that the sit-in is unlawful, having no permission from the District Office. There is no information about what will happen when the two-weeks’ detention are finished.

Saruul is being held in a cell with 11 or 12 other prisoners, and Arslan is very threatened.

Asian Gypsy: The demonstrators had issued a request to meet with the President. The President's office, instead, replied with a statement branding the demonstration as "hindering with the due government process of finding responsible parties to the post-election riots and therefore illegal". Despite the setback of having their leader detained, the demonstrators have stated their intention to continue their sit-in until all detainees are released.

Action needed now!

Contact the Mongolian embassy or consulate in your country (see list attached below):

• call for Saruul and Arslan to be released immediately;

• support the protesters’ call for the post-election detainees to
be released immediately.

Contact the Minister for Foreign Affairs in your country:

• ask them to make representations to Mongolia for the release of political detainees including Saruul and Arslan.
